Kenyan artists create these boards manually instead of using power tools. Only wood from naturally and previously fallen trees is used to protect new trees from harvest. Artisans in Nairobi create these bracelets by hand, using recycled post-consumer glass bottles. The company donates $1.00 for each bracelet sold to educate the children and extended families of their local employees, as education in Kenya is not free.

Completely biodegradable, these bags are hand-woven from sustainably-sourced plant material. They're durable, and incorporate traditional techniques of Malagasy weavers. Using the local hardwood for the handles and buttons apply a much higher value to wood than other uses. Aesthetic Movement works directly with the artisans and farmers who hand craft every piece in the comfort and safety of their homes. Through fair trade partnerships they increase wages, help grow small businesses in Madagascar and contribute to community and economic development efforts.

Aesthetic Movement believes that luxurious products can be created based on the principles of reuse. Their entire process in making this soap is based on the reuse of restaurant waste vegetable oil from America's finest restaurants, which is turned into biodiesel transportation fuel which reduces carbon emissions by up to 75%. The purified byproduct of this process is combined with organic aloe vera leaf juice and other ingredients to make the soap.

Pop Art bracelets
Designer Carlos Sobral uses only recycled resin in these bracelets, with dyes made from organic plant material. The packaging materials are environmentally friendly. The water used in the cooling and polishing processes is recycled, and the workshop is powered using hydro-electricity generated from a nearby waterfall. Sobral’s workshop in Rio follows Fair Trade policies, hiring and training 160 local employees, as well as providing meals, medical care and a retirement plan, rare benefits in Brazil.

Plastic water bottles are recycled into the felt used to make these graphic, color-blocked appliqué pillows, and each pillow cover keeps four water bottles out of the landfill. Handmade from start to finish, the letters are meticulously cut and stitched.

Sixteen different animal motifs are sandblasted onto the surface of these glasses, which come from the bottoms of recycled beer bottles. They are made in a shop employing workers in the city of Winterthur.

The bee population worldwide is endangered, and no one knows why. This product calls attention to their plight, as well as supports Apple & Bee’s Bee Foundation in Australia, which aids research in Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Hemp, a “super crop” because of its speed of growth, is the major component of this purse. The tag is made out of 100% organic cotton. Apple&Bee’s main philosophy is to make products that last, so there's less landfill each year. The company, certified by Climate Friendly as a global organization, buys back solar power and wind fuel to create a carbon neutral footprint.

This game and its pieces are made from 100% hand felted wool; the pouch is made of jute. Handmade felt has been used for hundreds of years as simple floor coverings in traditional Indian homes. The art of felt making started to die out as demand for felt floor coverings dropped, causing artisans to seek other occupations and to migrate to urban areas; away from their villages, homes and families. This production supports sheepherders, felt makers and seamstresses and keeps them close to their home.

Smart Casual Black –Tie Jewelry & Charms
This product is created exclusively by local indigenous artisans using traditional craft techniques, as part of Artecnica’s Design with Conscience collection. The designer contributed her design to elevate the local craft to a fashion object, however the artisans determine the pricing. This was made by hand, requiring no energy except human power in the assembly process. The metal clasp and glass beads can be re-used or recycled, and the packaging is all paper and cardboard.

This hand-sewn piece is made almost entirely with Sensuede, a material consisting of 100% recycled polyester made from post-consumer soda bottles and fabric scraps. Sensuede is stain resistant and durable, and will look fresh for years to come. The Aster+Sage philosophy is to design first, and then find recycled materials to complement the designs.

No electricity or machines are necessary for production, and the weaving preserves a traditional craft skill. The work provides much needed income for the women, who can work in the home while balancing farming and childcare. Bamboula works directly with artisan groups to assure a fair price, and monitors working conditions.

This hand-woven throw is made of cotton, a local raw material which sustains a local agriculture. The use of low-impact dyes assure healthy working conditions and clean water. The sale of these products creates jobs which sustain women and families in Ethiopia, who work in well lighted and ventilated spaces, and receive fair pay with benefits. Creative Women, a member of the Fair Trade Federation, works with suppliers to promote good working conditions; to develop transparency between producer and importer; and to assist their producers in creating marketable and elegant products.

All of the materials utilized in creating this robot are reclaimed, and can be recycled or repurposed. Using reclaimed cardboard and metal saves natural resources by not having to create new materials. D.I.G.S. pays market value for these products. No children are used in production of this item.

Designed by Leon Ransmeiler as a responsible alternative to the ubiquitous, wasteful and often toxic writing pen, the DBA pen is the only version in the world which is 98% biodegradable. Its body is made from a certified BPI biodegradable material derived from non-GMO corn. The reservoir is composed of biodegradable fiber from plant cellulose, and the ink is ACMI-certified and non-toxic. The packaging is made from 100% PC recycled, chlorine-free, FSC-certified paper. The pen is produced at a wind-powered facility in the United States.

These baskets are hand made from fallen palm fronds along the banks of the Nile River in Egypt.  They are handmade by a women's co-op in rural village in the Fayoum region of Egypt. The women use a thousand-year-old tradition by utilizing their natural resources to live sustainably without negatively impacting their environment. A percentage of the sale for each basket will be donated to S.P.A.R.E. (Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt).

Tablemats are handmade from PaperStone, a 100% post-consumer recycled standard office paper. They are backed with composite cork made from the renewable outer bark of the cork oak, and are silkscreened using non-toxic water based inks. PaperStone is produced only 117 miles from the Dinah Coops studio, requiring minimal transport. Through a “renewal” service, customers can send back their tablemats and coasters to be resurfaced and printed with new patterns and colors.

Each bowl is entirely hand-crafted and hand-rubbed for a beautiful finish. This work has been tested by Intertek Laboratory, and is food safe. Dwelling’s goal is to surpass Fair Trade standards, by providing funds, clothing and food for the workers in this workshop. Since the earthquake, workers’ families are camping on the grounds of the workshop. Dwelling supports www.leagueofhope.com.

It can be composted after its useful life of about 5 years.  There are very few parts and minimal packaging; even the ribbon can be re-used. The assembly facility is in an economically depressed city in Michigan, and has brought back local jobs in a tough economy. Severine Zaslavski designed a green twist on verrine glasses, using only reclaimed soda bottles and wooden wine barrel slats. Both are single materials which can be fed back into nature's resource loop. The original wine barrels were made of oak staves and processed from timber purchased in sustainable and managed forests. After the bottles are cut, the edges are melted and annealed. Re-purposing of glass requires a fraction of the energy compared to melting recycled glass. The Green Glass Company purchases renewable energy from its energy provider, and donates a percentage of profits to The World Wildlife Fund and other environmental not-for-profit organizations.

The stone “ice cubes” are the re-purposed cores generated from drilling holes to create stone napkin rings. The hardwood comes from FSC-certified suppliers. The wood composts and the stones may be returned to the beach. Sea Stones plants a rough quarry stone in the ocean for every smooth stone they collect, and replants ten times the number of trees used each year. The Sea Stones workshop is heated and cooled with a geothermal heat pump. The energy required for tooling comes from water, which is 100% re-circulated.

Cruelty-free silk, a compassionate variation of silk, is spun from cocoons, after the silk-worms metamorphose into moths. The Eri fabric is hand woven on bamboo looms, using human power. This is a cottage industry, employing landless women weavers of the indigenous Bodo tribe of Northeast India. Cocoon rearers, yarn makers and weavers are stakeholders in a cooperative, receiving an annual bonus and medical coverage.

This certified organic tea is grown on the only organic farm in Bangladesh, which follows the sustainability teachings of Masanobu Fukuoka. Only natural rainwater is used to irrigate the tea plants, and the farming method has regenerated the entire region’s ecosystem. All teas are processed in a bio-gas facility. All packaging, tea bags and tea are biodegradable and compostable. The package can be recycled or composted. Garden-direct tea requires less transport because there are no middlemen, no extra shipping burdens and no extra packaging or handling. The design of this vase has been woven since the time of Rwandan kings, and is only produced in the Nyanza region. Men make the bases, and women weave fibers through the base. They are made from organically grown, often wild plants. If dyes are needed for the colors, they are sourced from companies in the U.S. which produce safe, organic versions. Many Rwandan weavers are female survivors of the 1994 genocide who were widowed, and many have families to support. Gahaya Links has trained over 3,000 women in weaving techniques to provide them with sustainable income through trade. Trading 4 Treasures is a nonprofit, returning all profits to the country of origin for charitable projects.
